Kirk Swanson is the Democratic candidate for the New York State 73rd Assembly District in the 2002 election season. On November 4, 2008 after another bruising and divisive campaign as the night wears thin it becomes clear for the second time this decade that the Presidential candidate with the most popular votes is not the winner of the Electoral College system. That next morning Americans wake in disbelief with the world asking how did this happen again.

As the weeks pass the popularly chosen candidate decides not to concede, as Democrat Al Gore did in 2000, leading to a Constitutional crisis. In this state of confusion, many Americans take to the streets in support of their favorite candidate, further dividing the nation while believing that their visible show of support could sway the Supreme Court. However, this time the Supreme Court is demanding a political resolution to the crisis.

The United States of America is now the only country in the world with an Electoral College system, which has four times prevented the candidate with the most popular votes from becoming President. The Electoral College system was created as a compromise to the slave owning states, offering greater electoral power without requiring them to extend voting rights to African-Americans. Currently voters in smaller states like Wyoming and Delaware have more than four times the voting strength for President as do Californians and New York voters. With most states either strongly Democratic or Republican, this divisive system leaves only a hand full of states, or swing states, to determine the final outcome of the election.

Now we now know the signs were all around us. In March 2007 an Associated Press poll found that 75% of Americans believed our country was moving in the wrong direction. The percent is even higher after another divisive election season with the candidates, political parties, and special interests spending over two billion dollars advocating for their candidate while criticizing their opponent. During the final weeks before the election, again the two battleground states were Florida and Ohio. Hundreds of millions of dollars were spent in the final days to sway those few undecided voters and to suppress the turnout of their opposing voters. Once the beacon of democracy, how did the United States of America become a nation with such a dysfunctional democratic political system?

What is democracy? As President Lincoln proclaimed, “Government of, by and for the people.” According to many democracy advocates there is a three step process to creating a government of, by and for the people. The first and most important step is the belief that it is possible and desirable. The second is to learn more about democracy reform efforts. The third step is doing something specific to revive democracy. Additionally, advocates include at least four reforms: Electoral College, national voting system, campaign financing and a National Democracy Day Holiday.

To create a one person one vote election, all advocates agree the path to reviving democracy in America starts by reforming or removing the undemocratic Electoral College system.

Jeff is the 2002 Green Party Candidate for Congress in Indiana's 9th District. He is committed to such fundamental Green Party values as grassroots democracy, social justice, ecological wisdom, and nonviolent conflict resolution.

It is political season, and incumbents will try anything to save their jobs. This year, unfortunately, is just another example of politicians stopping at nothing to win their re-elections. There are several races in this year's election where a third party candidate could steer the election results in one direction or the other. One perverse example is the Pennsylvania senatorial campaign between Republican Sen. Rick Santorum and Democratic challenger Bob Casey. The embattled incumbent's campaign has instructed donors to support Green Party Candidate Carl Romanelli in his election bid. In some polls, Casey is ahead of Santorum by double digits, according to an article in Wednesday's USA Today. Some polls, however, show the gap narrowing and Democrats fear that Romanelli will "siphon" votes away from Casey and allow Santorum to be re-elected. Santorum's campaign hasn't denied the support, with spokeswoman Virginia Davis saying that the campaign "encouraged those who inquired to help with the Green Party effort." Davis went on to say that the campaign welcomes "Romanelli's entry into the race because at least he's expressed a real interest in being up front and honest about where he is on the issues."

Spare us the spin, Ms. Casey. The Santorum campaign is supporting Romanelli because he may help Santorum win re-election, not because he's expressing a real interest in being up front and honest on issues. Democrats, while thinking that they have a legitimate complaint, should bite their proverbial tongues, because third party candidates have helped their embattled incumbents win Senate re-election several times in the past decade, according to the USA Today article written by Kathy Kiely. Any Democrat or Republican candidate for office who cannot defend and debate the merits of third party platforms and planks are not fit to hold public office. Their knowledge is proven too specialized to be trusted with many decisions. Members of third parties should be asking the two party candidates where they stand on third party issues. In California's recent recall election, I think the Green Party Candidate had the best of published ideas. Yet the "progressive" California voters still dance to the two party tune. If California indicates where we are headed in national politics, we've been there for two centuries. Where is the progress?

Any public debates that take place without representatives of many third parties ought to be ignored. Always remember that a two party debate is worth less and quite often, worthless as well. If it is wisdom to know your enemy, it is wisdom to know all candidates, in the event they are elected only to then become your enemy. Two party dancers know only what is being promised, they know very few candidates very well. If I am voting, I owe it to you and me to choose the best possible candidate for a job, regardless of political party. If my vote counts in the end, I vote not for me but for us.

Metropolitan Minority Outreach (MMO) is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization founded in 1986. MMO's original goal was to increase the number of Twin Cities minority candidates for employment within the information systems field. I recently heard on a local morning radio show (KS95) that the Twin Cities (Minneapolis and St. Paul) have the highest daycare costs in the nation, right behind New York.

I have no idea why the Twin Cities daycare costs are so high. At least New York has world class entertainment (theatre, concerts, and restaurants) and a high cost of living in general (high taxes and real estate). The same can't be said for the Twin Cities, which has average entertainment and doesn't have nearly the high cost of living as New York. This shocked me. So much for choice for working parents in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Many women are leaving the workforce because of the high cost of daycare. Many parents don't qualify for government assisted programs, even when they earn barely over $9.00 per hour ($18,720 annually). Can you imagine having 3 or more children and paying over $2,400 per month for daycare ($28,800).

This situation is terrible for Twin Cities working parents and is another knife in the backs of hard working people. Some parents are better off on welfare then working. What a joke. Apparently, only 70 % of women are in the work force (KS95). It seems that the establishment is spitting in the faces of hard working parents in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Many Minnesotans blame Governor Tim Pawlenty for the reduction in assistance to working parents. While Pawlenty is partly to blame, both Democrats and Republicans need to share the blame.

Former Governor, Jesse Ventura should receive most of the blame for budget cuts. Ventura decimated Minnesota's economy by spending and throwing away the large surplus that Minnesota once had. I believe that something must be done to fix the problem of the high cost of daycare in Minneapolis and St. Paul. This is an outcry for a city that prides itself on diversity, tolerance and a high standard of living. If things don't change soon, it could be the beginning of social decay.

You might think that I'm starting to sound like a socialist/liberal. Au contraire mon amis. I'm not saying that we should throw money at the problem but like a true conservative, I believe in the value of hard work. Working parents should have the option of remaining in the work force. These is good family values. I think too often that government officials can't relate to the average person. They are usually financially well off and don't have the financial worries that the average family has, like feeding your children. It's time that working parents in Minneapolis and St. Paul are no longer kicked to the curb and spat on. It's time that they are given adequate consideration. It's time for change.

Let's say John throws a bucket of water on the floor in Jane's room when she is not there. He then hides himself to watch Jane's reaction on her return. When Jane enters the room she searches high and low for the cause but cannot find the reason for the water on the floor. She then goes on to wipe the floor. John lets out an evil chuckle under his breath at Jane's plight and ignorance about the root cause.

This is a typical analogy of how a spiritual reason such as an attack by a ghost (John) can cause a problem in life such as a heart condition (i.e. the water on the floor). Due to the fact that we do not have the sixth sense vision to see or perceive the ghost, our search for the cause of, for example, the chest pain remains limited only to the physical or psychological dimension.

3. What does Spiritual Healing heal? We can now appreciate that in cases of heart disease resulting from a spiritual root cause, medical or surgical treatment can only alleviate the consequent damage done by the spiritual root cause. Thus by treating the heart condition by surgery or medicine, medical sciences can at best bring about a symptomatic cure. The condition however reoccurs as the root cause, for example, the ghost, is not taken care of.

Spiritual Healing is about diagnosis and removal of the spiritual root cause of the problem, that is, the ghost in the above example of heart disease. It could also be used for stopping a potential problem happening in the first place.

Though advanced Spiritual Healing remedies can also revert the physical damage done, in most cases it is advisable to use physical measures (treatment) to alleviate the physical damage (i.e. the water in our example above). This is because one would have to use a lot of spiritual energy to achieve what can be done with comparatively lower input at a physical level. This is considering that spiritual energy is invaluable and extremely difficult to acquire compared to any physical effort.
